John James invented what he called a vane engine which was a form of rotary internal combustion engine. He built a prototype and actually got it firing whne it was turned over using an air drill at a local factory in High Wycombe (Broom and Wade).
No progress was made on the engine.

John James invented an archemedian screw based personal swimming contraption.
Ray Willis tried it out in the Thames at Hurley - it was not very good and fell apart in the water after a short frantic attempt to get it running.
